A ndrej Babis is one of the wealthiest and most controversial figures in the Czech Republic, having built a massive business empire before entering politics and serving as the country's Prime Minister. Born in what is now Slovakia, Babis began his career in international trade during the communist era. After the Velvet Revolution, he founded Agrofert in 1993, initially as a trading company for agricultural goods.
He aggressively expanded Agrofert, acquiring dozens of companies in agriculture, food processing, and chemicals, turning it into the largest conglomerate in the country. In 2011, he entered politics, founding the anti-establishment ANO party. His political career culminated in his appointment as Prime Minister of the Czech Republic from 2017 to 2021. His tenure was marked by controversy and accusations of conflicts of interest between his political power and his vast business holdings, which he placed in trust funds to comply with new laws. He remains a dominant force in both Czech business and politics.
