C armen Thyssen-Bornemisza, born María del Carmen Rosario Soledad Cervera y Fernández de la Guerra, is a Spanish socialite, philanthropist, and prominent art collector. A former beauty queen who was crowned Miss Spain in 1961, her life changed dramatically when she became the fifth and final wife of Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza, a Swiss industrialist and one of the 20th century's foremost art collectors.
After the Baron's death in 2002, she inherited a significant fortune and a portion of his legendary art collection. She has since expanded the collection with her own acquisitions. A significant part of her collection is on loan to the Spanish state and is housed in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid, alongside the main collection that her husband sold to Spain. She has been a central figure in the Spanish art world for decades, though her negotiations with the Spanish government over the future of her collection have often been complex and highly publicized.
