D oris Fisher is an American self-made billionaire who co-founded the clothing retailer The Gap, Inc. with her late husband, Donald Fisher. In 1969, frustrated by their inability to find a pair of jeans that fit well, they opened their first store in San Francisco, which sold a simple selection of Levi's jeans and records. This single store would become the foundation of a global apparel empire.
The Fishers grew The Gap into a cultural icon of American casual style. They expanded the company's portfolio by acquiring Banana Republic and by creating their own successful brand, Old Navy, which focused on affordable fashion for the whole family. Doris served as the company's merchandiser for many years, playing a key role in shaping the brand's aesthetic. The company went public in 1976. Though she has retired from an active role, she and her three sons retain a large stake in the company. She is also a world-renowned collector of contemporary art.
