S heikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, often referred to by his initials HBJ, is a Qatari royal, politician, and one of the world's most powerful and influential investors. He served as the Prime Minister of Qatar from 2007 to 2013 and also as the country's foreign minister. During his time in government, he was also the head of the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), the country's massive sovereign wealth fund.
As the head of the QIA, he was the architect of Qatar's audacious and high-profile global investment strategy, using the country's vast natural gas wealth to acquire trophy assets around the world. These included major stakes in companies like Volkswagen and Glencore, and iconic real estate such as London's Harrods department store and The Shard skyscraper. He has also built a massive personal fortune through his own private investments. He remains a central and highly connected figure in global finance and diplomacy.
