R ajnikant "Rajju" Shroff is a self-made Indian billionaire who is the founder and chairman of UPL Limited (formerly United Phosphorus Limited), one of the largest agrochemicals companies in the world. He founded the company in 1969 with a focus on producing red phosphorus, a key ingredient in matches. He has since built UPL into a global giant in the crop protection and agricultural chemicals industry through a combination of organic growth and a series of major international acquisitions.
His most transformative deal was the 2019 acquisition of the American agrochemicals company Arysta LifeScience for $4.2 billion, which catapulted UPL into the top tier of global players. He is a chemist by training and has been a pioneer in the Indian chemical industry. He has since handed over the day-to-day management of the publicly traded company to his sons, Jai and Vikram, but he remains the chairman and guiding force of the agrochemicals empire he created. He has also been awarded the Padma Bhushan, one of India's highest civilian honors.
