S ergey Lomakin is a prominent Russian retail entrepreneur, known for co-founding two of the country's most successful retail chains. His career in retail began in the late 1990s when he and his business partner, Artem Khachatryan, founded the Kopeika chain of discount grocery stores. They successfully grew Kopeika into a major national player before selling it to the competitor X5 Retail Group in a landmark deal in 2007.
After the sale of Kopeika, Lomakin and Khachatryan did not rest on their laurels. They identified a new niche in the market and in 2007 launched Fix Price, a chain of fixed-price variety stores. The concept, inspired by international 'dollar stores,' was a massive hit in Russia, offering a wide range of household goods, cosmetics, and food items at a single low price point. Lomakin's expertise in logistics, sourcing, and retail operations allowed Fix Price to expand at a phenomenal pace, becoming one of Europe's largest chains of its kind. The company successfully completed an IPO in London in 2021, cementing Lomakin's reputation as a master of the discount retail format.
