S ytse "Sid" Sijbrandij is a Dutch technology entrepreneur and the co-founder and CEO of GitLab, a leading open-source software development platform. He started his career with a variety of ventures, including building recreational submarines. In 2012, he discovered an open-source project called GitLab, created by the Ukrainian programmer Dmitriy Zaporozhets. Recognizing its potential, Sijbrandij commercialized the project, co-founding GitLab Inc. with Zaporozhets to provide a more complete and enterprise-focused version of the platform.
Under Sijbrandij's leadership as CEO, GitLab has become a major player in the DevOps space, competing with giants like Microsoft's GitHub. The company is famous for its radical transparency and for being one of the world's largest all-remote companies, with thousands of employees working from dozens of countries, a culture that was in place long before the COVID-19 pandemic. He successfully led the company to its IPO on the Nasdaq in 2021, a move that turned both him and his co-founder into billionaires.
