B jörgólfur Thor Björgólfsson, commonly known as Thor Bjorgolfsson, is an Icelandic billionaire with a dramatic and turbulent career. He is Iceland's first and only billionaire. He made his first fortune in the post-Soviet Russian beverage industry in the 1990s, founding a brewing company in St. Petersburg which he later sold to Heineken for a massive profit. He returned to Iceland as a national hero and became a major investor in the country's booming banking sector, taking a controlling stake in Landsbanki, one of Iceland's largest banks.
His fortune, and that of his country, collapsed during the 2008 global financial crisis, which led to the spectacular failure of all three of Iceland's major banks. He lost nearly his entire fortune and was deeply in debt. However, in a remarkable comeback, he managed to restructure his debts and rebuild his wealth through his private equity firm, Novator Partners. Novator has made a series of highly successful investments, particularly in the telecommunications sectors in Eastern Europe and Latin America, and in technology startups. His incredible recovery has restored his billionaire status.
