T ony Xu is a Chinese-American billionaire and the co-founder and chief executive officer of DoorDash, the largest food delivery company in the United States. Born in Nanjing, China, he immigrated to the U.S. with his family at the age of five. His mother, who had been a doctor in China, worked three jobs a day for years, including as a server at a Chinese restaurant, an experience that would later inspire his entrepreneurial vision. In 2013, while studying for his MBA at Stanford's Graduate School of Business, he and his classmates Stanley Tang, Andy Fang, and Evan Moore founded the company.
As CEO, Xu has been the driving force behind DoorDash's aggressive and highly successful growth strategy. He built a complex, three-sided marketplace connecting restaurants, delivery drivers (or 'Dashers'), and consumers, and led the company to become the clear market leader in the intensely competitive U.S. food delivery space. He successfully guided DoorDash through a massive initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange in 2020. He has since expanded the company's focus beyond restaurants into the delivery of groceries, convenience items, and other retail goods.
