T orbjörn Törnqvist is a Swedish billionaire who is the co-founder and chief executive officer of Gunvor Group, one of the world's largest independent commodity trading companies. After a career as an oil trader for companies like BP, he co-founded Gunvor in 1997 with the powerful Russian oligarch Gennady Timchenko. For many years, the company became a dominant trader of Russian oil, a business that was the source of significant controversy and speculation about its close ties to the Kremlin.
In March 2014, in a pivotal and well-timed move, Timchenko sold his entire stake in the company to Törnqvist, just one day before Timchenko was sanctioned by the United States following the annexation of Crimea. This left Törnqvist as the undisputed majority owner. Since then, he has diversified Gunvor's trading operations globally, reducing its reliance on Russia and expanding into liquefied natural gas (LNG), metals, and other commodities. He is also a passionate and successful competitive sailor, with his team Artemis Racing having competed in the America's Cup.
