W alther Moreira Salles Júnior is a Brazilian billionaire and a member of one of the country's oldest and most respected banking dynasties. He is one of the four sons of the late Walther Moreira Salles, a prominent banker and diplomat who founded Unibanco. After their father's death, the four brothers inherited the family's vast fortune, which is centered on their large stake in Itaú Unibanco Holding, the largest bank in Latin America, which was formed by the 2008 merger of Unibanco with its rival, Banco Itaú.
While his brothers Fernando Roberto and Pedro have been more directly involved in the governance of the bank, Walther has forged a highly successful and acclaimed career as a filmmaker. He is an award-winning director, documentarian, and film producer, known for internationally recognized films such as "Central Station" (which was nominated for two Academy Awards) and "The Motorcycle Diaries." His vast wealth is derived from his inherited stake in the massive banking conglomerate, which he shares with his three brothers.
