D aniel Maté is a Spanish billionaire and one of the key executives and major shareholders of Glencore, the world's largest and most powerful commodities trading and mining company. He joined the company's predecessor, Marc Rich + Co., in the 1980s and rose through the ranks to become a senior trader and a key member of the company's inner circle.
Maté has headed Glencore's zinc and lead marketing divisions, two of the company's key business areas. He became a multi-billionaire after Glencore's massive initial public offering in 2011, which turned its top partners and traders into some of the wealthiest people in the world. He has since retired from his executive role but remains a significant shareholder in the commodities giant. Like the other Glencore partners, he is known for being extremely private.
