D aryl Katz is a Canadian billionaire who made his fortune in the pharmacy business and is best known as the owner of the National Hockey League's Edmonton Oilers. A lawyer by training, Katz began his entrepreneurial career by acquiring the Canadian rights to the U.S.-based Medicine Shoppe pharmacy franchise. He then founded the Katz Group of Companies and grew it into a massive pharmacy empire by acquiring major Canadian drugstore chains like Rexall.
In 2012, he sold the company's pharmacy business for a reported C$3 billion, which provided him with a massive infusion of capital. He has since focused on his other interests, primarily the Oilers and real estate development. As the owner of the Oilers, he was the driving force behind the development of the Rogers Place arena and the surrounding Ice District in downtown Edmonton, one of the largest mixed-use sports and entertainment districts in North America. He is known for being extremely private and rarely gives interviews.
