S omurai Jaruphnit is a Thai billionaire whose wealth is derived from her family's significant stake in the Charoen Pokphand (CP) Group, Thailand's largest private company and one of the world's most powerful agribusiness conglomerates. She is one of the four daughters of the late Jaran Chiaravanont, who was one of the senior brothers in the family that founded and controls the CP Group. The group was started as a small seed shop in Bangkok by her uncles and grandfather.
The CP Group has since grown into a massive global enterprise with core businesses in animal feed and livestock production, making it a world leader in agribusiness. The group has also successfully diversified into a wide range of other industries, including telecommunications (through its company True Corporation) and retail (with its 7-Eleven and Makro chains in Thailand). Somurai, like most of her relatives, is not involved in the day-to-day management of the sprawling family empire but her inherited stake makes her a key shareholder.
