T obias "Tobi" Lütke is a German-Canadian billionaire and the co-founder and CEO of Shopify, a leading global e-commerce platform. A self-taught computer programmer, Lütke dropped out of school in Germany to pursue an apprenticeship in programming. In 2004, he and his partners originally set out to create an online snowboard store called Snowdevil. Frustrated with the clunky and inadequate e-commerce software available at the time, he decided to build his own platform from scratch.
Recognizing that the software they had built was more valuable than the snowboard store itself, they pivoted their business and launched Shopify in 2006. The company provides a comprehensive suite of tools that allows merchants and entrepreneurs of all sizes to easily set up and run their own online stores, from building a website to managing inventory and processing payments. The platform has become a massive global success, empowering millions of online businesses and is often positioned as a key alternative and competitor to Amazon's marketplace. Lütke took the company public in 2015, and its spectacular growth has made him one of the most successful and respected figures in the technology industry.
