V ikram Lal is an Indian billionaire and the patriarch of the family that controls Eicher Motors, the parent company of the iconic motorcycle brand, Royal Enfield. The family's business was founded by his father as a tractor manufacturer. Vikram, an engineer by training, took over the family business and, in the 1990s, made the pivotal and highly successful decision to focus on the then-struggling Royal Enfield brand, which Eicher had acquired.
He revived the classic motorcycle brand, which has a cult-like following in India, and turned it into a massive commercial success, dominating the mid-sized motorcycle segment both in India and, increasingly, in international markets. He has since retired from an executive role and has passed on the leadership of the company to his son, Siddhartha Lal, who has been the architect of Royal Enfield's modern resurgence and global expansion. The family's vast fortune is derived from their large stake in the publicly traded Eicher Motors.
