W ilma "Billie" Tisch is an American philanthropist and the matriarch of one of New York's most prominent business dynasties. She is the widow of the late Laurence "Larry" Tisch, a self-made billionaire who, along with his brother Bob Tisch, founded and built the Loews Corporation into a massive and highly diversified conglomerate. The Tisch brothers started with a single hotel and built an empire with major interests in insurance (CNA), natural gas pipelines (Boardwalk Pipelines), and tobacco (Lorillard), in addition to their hotel business (Loews Hotels).
Upon her husband's death in 2003, Wilma inherited his massive fortune. She has since dedicated her life to philanthropy, becoming one of New York City's most prominent benefactors. She has given away hundreds of millions of dollars to a wide range of causes, with a particular focus on the arts and education. She is a longtime trustee and major donor to her alma mater, Skidmore College, and has been a major supporter of institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The family's business is now run by the next generation, including her son, James S. Tisch, who is the CEO of Loews Corporation.
